UK Dyson winners hope portable turbine blows away competition

In front of the barely-used wind turbines atop the 43-storey Strata tower in London’s Elephant and Castle, former Lancaster University researchers Nicolas Orellana and Yaseen Noorani show off their prototype O-Wind hand-held device.

The choice of venue is no accident. The Strata’s three large turbines were unveiled with great fanfare in 2010, with the promise of generating eight percent of the residential building’s electricity. In fact the turbines rarely appear to be working, a state of affairs blamed on residents objecting to the noise created.

Orellana and Noorani say their omnidirectional, single-axis wind turbines are the answer for those living in apartments, who can’t benefit from the roof turbines used by house-dwellers.
