U.N. urges countries to be more ambitious to avert worst effects of global warming

Keeping the Earth’s temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius means making rapid, unprecedented changes in the way people use energy to eat, travel and live or we risk even more extreme weather and loss of species. U.N. meteorological agency chief, Petteri Taalas said that pledges made by signatories to the Paris agreement are “not good enough” to meet a 2-degrees Celsius global warming target.

And there needs to be a “much higher ambition level”. Keeping the Earth’s temperature rise to only 1.5 degrees Celsius rather than the 2 degrees Celsius target agreed at the Paris talks in 2015 is not impossible but more needs to be done, Taalas told reporters in Geneva after the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report on this issue.
