German winemakers toast best harvest in 20 years

Lovers of Riesling, Spaetburgunder and more German wines are in for a real treat. A hot, dry summer in Germany has winemakers raising a glass to excellent harvests this year, promising a 2018 vintage that is expected to be among the best in the last 20 years, according to the German Wine Institute. Record-high temperatures with little rain this summer, and a wet winter before it, has had a positive effect on grape growing this year.

After a below-average grape harvest last year, the most recent yield estimates for the 2018 vintage suggest that Germany will produce around 10.7 million hectoliters of wine this year. According to the German Wine Institute, this works out to a 23% increase over the past 10 years.
