Tens of thousands turn out to save Germany’s Hambach Forest

Tens of thousands of Germans demonstrated in support of saving the Hambach Forest. Crowds cheered and celebrated following a court ruling that German power company RWE is not permitted to clear the ancient forest for mining until a court reviews claims from an environmental group. RWE has said it would lose as much as $5.75 billion if it could not continue to mine lignite by removing the last bit of the ancient forest.

The court, however, ruled that RWE can continue to mine lignite as long as it does not use forested areas in Hambach. The utility giant, one of Europe’s largest carbon dioxide emitters, has drawn heavy criticism from environmentalists over the planned clearing of the Hambach forest.
