Sea turtles make annual pilgrimage to Mexican beach

Mexico’s beautiful La Escobilla Beach became the scene of one of nature’s wonders when hundreds of sea turtles emerged from the ocean during their annual migration to make nests and lay their eggs on the sandy beaches. La Escobilla is part of 15 kilometres of protected shoreline along Mexico’s Oaxacan Pacific coast that contains 12 beaches where olive ridley turtles nest, according to the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.

Due to the concentration of nests, La Escobilla is among the most important nesting sites. The beach sees between seven and eight waves of nesting marine turtles per year. Many turtles arrive with fishing equipment and garbage wrapped around them which slows them down.
