International convention sought to control narcotic drugs

President Maithripala Sirisena says that an international convention is needed to control drugs. The President said this while attending a conference on drugs, non-communicable diseases and sustainable development organized by the World Health Organization. The conference was held to coincide with the 73rd UN General Assembly. President Maithripala Sirisena was the Chief Guest of the event. The President invited the foreign delegates to attend the conference Global Liquor Policy scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka next year.

Meanwhile President Maithripla Sirisena met the UN Secretary General António Guterres at his office in New York. The UN Secretary General warmly welcomed the President. Speaking on the occasion the President said that he would further accelerate the path towards freedom, peace and reconciliation. The UN Secretary General appreciated the support given by Sri Lanka to the UN. Thereafter the President met the Secretary General of Commonwealth Patricia Scotland. She commended Sri Lanka’s progress on democracy, reconciliation, supremacy of law and human rights.
