Strong quake and tsunami wreak havoc on Indonesia’s Sualwesi island

A 7.5 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi island on, triggering a two-metre high tsumani, killing at least 48 people. Authorities are having difficulties coordinating rescue efforts as the strong quake caused a power outage that cut communications around Palu and the nearby fishing town of Donggala, the closest to the epicentre of the quake 27 km (17 miles) away.

Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency on Saturday (September 29) said “many bodies” had been found along the shoreline of Palu, adding the death toll was expected to rise. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes. In August, a series of major quakes killed over 500 people in the tourist island of Lombok and destroyed dozens of villages along its northern coast.
