Gamini Senarath’s case will be heard daily from October 30th

Orders have been issued to hold daily hearings of the case against four persons including Gamini Senarath, the Chief of Staff of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The Permanent High Court at Bar set up to take up large scale financial fraud and corruption cases decided to take up the case for hearing daily with effect from the 30th of next month.

Accordingly notices were issued on the first, second, third and fourth witnesses of the case to appear in Court on the 30th of October. Gamini Senarath as well as the other defendants appeared in the Special High Court at Bar today. The other defendants of this case are former Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Piyadasa Kuda Balage, Former Samurdhi Commissioner Neil Bandara Hapuvinna and Lasantha Bandara.

They are accused of committing this large scale fraud by depositing in Helenco Hotel Pvt. Ltd a sum of 500 million rupees given by Litro Lanka Gas Company to Canwill Holdings Pvt. Ltd. The case will be summoned on the 08th of October to inquire whether the defence party has received the related documents. The Attorney General has filed indictments against the defendants under the Public Property Money Laundering Prevention Act and the Penal Code.

A sum of 18.5 Billion rupees was allocated based on an approval of the Cabinet in the year 2012 for a Grand Hyatt Regent Hotel constructed under the firm affiliated to the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation. The Financial Crimes Investigation Division  carried out an inquiry with respect to misappropriation of four billion rupees of this amount in the Hambanthota Hyatt Regency Hotel Project.
