SWRD Bandaranaike’s 59th Death Anniversary commemorated

Today is the 59th death commemoration of Former Prime Minister and founder of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike. His death and the death of former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike as well as that of a former Speaker Anura Bandaranaike were also commemorated today.

The Late S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike entered politics contesting the Colombo Municipal Council from the United National Party. Thereafter he left the United National Party in 1951 and launched the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He became the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka after winning the General elections in 1956. He undertook a revolutionary change in the five great forces of Sanga, Weda, Guru, Govi, Kamkaru setting a fitting example to society. Prime aim of the Human being is to serve the human being was his theme for service.

He was assassinated by a gunman on 26th September in the year 1959 when he was 60 years of age.

Parallel to the commemoration of the 59th Death Anniversary of SWRD Bandaranaike, commemoration ceremonies were also held on behalf of Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Anura Bandaranaike.  A commemorative ceremony was held near the Bandaranaike Samadhi in Horagolla. Floral tributes were offered by Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumartunge and family members. Floral tributes were also paid by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva on behalf of President Maithripala Sirisena.

Among others who joined in the occasion were many people’s representatives including Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, and Ministers Mangala Samaraweera, Mahinda Amaraweera and Duminda Dissanayake.

The handing over of wheel chairs to differently abled persons also took place on the occasion.
