Search narrows for Captain Cook’s warship Endeavour

U.S. researchers believe they have narrowed down the decades-long search for the remains of the 18th century British sailor Captain James Cook’s ship the Endeavour.Experts believe the Endeavour is located off Goat Island in Newport, Rhode Island.

Members of the Rhode Island Marine Archeology Project (RIMAP) have been working with Australian authorities to find the boat for more than 25 years. Divers have been using SONAR equipment to locate what’s left of the ship.Experts are now testing the wood used to build the ship.

The historic ship is thought to be among 13 vessels scuttled in Newport Harbor during the American Revolutionary War against Britain, according to researchers at RIMAP.The Endeavour was later re-commissioned as the Lord Sandwich, which was its name when it was scuttled during the August 1778 Battle of Rhode Island by a British commander aiming to block the harbor.
