Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano roars to life with two explosions

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano erupted twice on Wednesday (September 19) sending columns of ash and smoke up to 3.2 kilometers (10,500 feet) into the air. The first eruption, the larger of the two, rattled to life at 6:37 p.m. (23:37 GMT) Mexico’s National Centre for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) said. Video showed the mountain side shaking and a large plume of ash, smoke, and incandescent material shooting up from the crater.The second eruption occurred at 9:21 p.m. (02:21 GMT, Thursday) sending a plume up 300 meters (980 feet) into the air. Glowing incandescent material could be seen spilling over the side of the volcano from footage captured with a night camera.
