Competitors battled wind and rain in the sixth stage of the Sky Extra Skyrunner World Series, with Spain’s Kilian Jornet and the U.S.’s Hillary Gerardi winning in the Scottish Highlands. Two hundred and three runners from 28 countries raced the course near the village of Kinlochleven in Western Scotland. It saw runners take on the 32 km (20 miles) route with 2,700m (8,858 feet) of vertical climb, reduced from 55 km (34 miles) and 4,700m (15,419 feet) due to bad weather.Jornet finished in a time of three hours 40 minutes and 33 seconds, with Sweden’s André Jonsson second in 3:42.33. Italy’s Daniel Jung took third in 3:45.03 for his first podium of the season.
The women’s race finished with a dramatic sprint to the line, with Gerardi clocking 4:17.48 in first place, just seven seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Jasmin Paris. Brittany Peterson of the United States was third in 4:25.44.The Skyrunner World series features ten Sky Classic and eight Sky Extra races with Sky Extra races typically being longer and with more elevation.
