With cries and lights, Mexico celebrates independence

Tens of thousands of Mexicans thronged into their capital’s Zocalo on Saturday (September 15) to celebrate Mexico’s independence from SpainShortly before midnight, President Enrique Pena Nieto gave the famous cry of the call to arms, known as “El Grito,” in Mexico City.”Viva Mexico!” is a current-day twist on rebel priest Miguel Hidalgo’s original call to arms in 1810. Mexicans eventually achieved their independence from Spain in 1821.This is Pena Nieto’s last time leading Independence Day celebrations in the Zocalo, with his presidency finishing up in December. He will make way for leftist president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
