Hong Kong issues highest alert as Super Typhoon Mangkhut closes in

Hong Kong issued the highest level of typhoon warning on Sunday, as super typhoon Mangkhut is nearing the city. Mangkhut, which has been reported to be the strongest this year, landed in northern Philippines at about 01:40 local time on Saturday, and is currently nearing Hong Kong. The deadly storm is expected to land in south China’s Guangdong Province Sunday afternoon. At 9:40 Sunday morning, the Hong Kong Observatory raised the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 9 to No. 10, commonly known as Typhoon 10, which is the highest level of alert. A No. 10 warning signal indicates that a typhoon’s intensity is expected to reach at least 118km per hour and gusts may reach 220km per hour. On the city’s coast, waves are already roaring, while the streets are empty, with few pedestrians or vehicles to be seen. Hong Kong’s air, sea and land public transportation has mostly been suspended. Schools have been closed, and hospitals, except for their emergency departments, have also been closed. Residents are making preparations ahead of the coming storm, including stocking up on supplies, and sealing doors and windows.
