At least six people were reported killed in Japan as typhoon Jebi sliced across the west on Tuesday (September 4), creating havoc at airports and damaging buildings.
Kansai International Airport, western Japan’s main international flight hub located on an island in the Bay of Osaka, was crippled in the storm after a tanker crashed into the main bridge leading to it.
The main terminal was also flooded after a storm surge coincided with a high tide, leaving airport staff struggling to keep water out. Over 2,600 people were stranded there, Kyodo news agency reported.
Jebi – whose name means “swallow” in Korean – was briefly a super typhoon and is the latest storm to hit Japan this summer following rains, landslides, floods and record-breaking heat that killed hundreds of people.
The storm made landfall on Shikoku, the smallest main island, around noon. It raked across the western part of the largest main island, Honshu, near the city of Kobe, several hours later, before heading out to the Sea of Japan in the evening.
