Hurricane Lane continues to weaken as it drenches Hawaii’s Big Island

More than two feet of rain drenched Big Island in Hawaii in a 36-hour period, as Tropical Storm Lane crept closer to the heart of the Hawaiian island. The storm, with its highest windspeeds diminishing to near 70 mph , was forecast to make its nearest approach to land just west of the island chain over the weekend, bringing the tropical storm to Maui and the state’s most populous island, Oahu. Lane, which peaked as a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale earlier this week, was downgraded to a tropical storm shortly before 300 GMT on Friday. It is expected to continue drifting slowly northward and weaken further.
