Public cautioned to be alert on the dengue epidemic

The health sector has cautioned the public to be on alert as the dengue epidemic is once again raising its head in several areas.

Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Specialist Dr. Hasitha Tissera said that dengue is one of the main diseases in Sri Lanka. He said that in the past they were able to treat dengue cases and reduce the number of deaths.

Additional Secretary of Community Health of the Health Ministry Specialist Dr. Lakshmie Somatunge said that dengue prevention programmes were being held in Districts such as Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Mannar and Jaffna. She said that it is one of their responsibilities to take action to prevent the disease. This cannot be handled by the Health Ministry alone. She added that everyone’s cooperation was necessary to overcome the disease.

35 thousand suspicious cases have already been reported so far this year. It is an increase when compared to last year. The number of suspicious cases reported last year was 19,578. The Epidemiology Unit has emphasized that this indicates the need to apprise the public of the need to get rid of dengue mosquito breeding grounds and initiatives that should be taken once contracted with the disease.
