Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe refers to a possibility of amending the Singapore Agreement

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has said that there is a possibility of amending the Sri Lanka Singapore Free Trade Agreement if it has any detrimental effect on the country. He was addressing a media briefing held at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Head Office.

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe mentioned that the President has appointed an Experts Committee in this respect to secure a report within two months. The President has instructed the Committee to undertake a comprehensive study of the Trade Agreement and see whether there are any matters detrimental to the country or the economic programme and show it through a report as there are opportunities to amend this agreement within one year.

In response to queries made by a journalist the Minister said that the agreement was first sent to the Attorney General and it was presented to the Cabinet with the endorsement of the Attorney General. It was thereafter signed with the approval of the Cabinet. It is not necessary to present the Agreement to Parliament.
