Italian authorities blame highway operator for bridge collapse in Genoa

Italian authorities on Wednesday blamed a deadly bridge collapse in Genoa on the highway operator, who they claim put profits before maintenance, while rescuers continued to dig for survivors in the wreckage.The Morandi Bridge, located in the northern Italian port city of Genoa, collapsed during a torrential downpour shortly before noon on Tuesday, killing 35 people. There were about 30 vehicles on the bridge when it collapsed. The vehicles, as well as concrete and debris, fell 45 meters to the ground when the bridge crumbled. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced after an emergency cabinet meeting in Genoa on Wednesday that the government would start the process of recovering the operating concessions from -Autostrade per l’Italia, the highway bridge operator.Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio and Infrastructure and Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli also made a direct statement to the media demanding the resignation of ¬Autostrade per l’Italia’s senior executives.
