Kandy Esala Perahera Festival begins on Sunday

The historic Kandy Esala Perahera Festival will begin on Sunday. A media briefing was organized in this respect at the Government Information Department under the patronage of Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna.

Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said that the Kandy Esala Perahera Festival can be described as an event organized to display the identity of the country. As Sri Lankans it is a known fact to the nation that the entire world has drawn its attention to the Kandy Esala Perahera. As such he added that this is an occasion in which the country could portray its historical gesture.

The planting of Kap at the four Maha Devales will be held on Sunday. Since then five internal Peraheras will be held for four days. One hundred elephants and nearly 1500 artistes are scheduled to join in this cultural festival.

The Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela told the journalists that the first Kumbal Perahera will be held on the 16th of August and it will leave from the main Wahalkada of the Dalada Maligawa and approach the Dalada Veediya. It will be the first Kumbal Perahera to parade the streets.  The first Randoli Perahera is scheduled to be held on the 21st of August. The final Randoli Perahera will parade the streets on the 25th of August. It will be followed by the Water Cutting Festival of the four Maha Devales. The Kandy Esala Perahera Festival will draw to a close with the day Perahera on the 26th of this month.

The handing over of the scroll to the President on the afternoon at the Presidents House in Kandy mentioning that the Perahera Festival has been held successfully, will bring the festival to close.
