Russia and Iran keen to avoid bloodbath in Syria’s Idlib, U.N. says

Russia, Iran and Turkey said during a meeting of the Syria humanitarian taskforce that they would do their utmost to avoid a battle that would threaten millions of civilians in the rebel-held Syrian province of Idlib. Egeland estimated that there were at least 4 million people in the potential battleground in northwest Syria, and he hoped diplomats and military envoys could reach a deal to prevent a “bloodbath.” He said the U.N. was preparing for any possible violence and would ask Turkey to keep its borders open to allow civilians to flee in case of need.
