Education Ministry rejects newspaper report

The Ministry of Education has emphasized that the report of Irida Divaina News Paper stating that “national schools are in danger, principals removed”, is completely false. The Ministry pointed out that the principals are not facing any such danger. The Irida Divaina Newspaper has reported that principals of about 20 schools including Colombo Vishaka, Devi Balika, Gampaha Ratnawali, Kandy Pushpadana Girls High School and Matara Sujatha are facing this problem. The Ministry of Education states that they have taken a policy decision to transfer principals who have completed a service of more than 8 years at a national school. The Ministry said fraud allegations have been levelled against some principals who have been serving in the same school for a number of years. Therefore this decision has been taken for the benefit of school students. The Ministry points out that the transfer system is properly implemented at present, but it was not so during the past. Transfers in the public service and educational administrative service are done 56 years. During the past those transfers were effected only on political connections. Therefore transferring of teachers who were serving on the same school for more than 10 years, were transferred with the intervention of Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. Permission have been given to transfer officers of the Educational Administrative Service, who are serving in the same place for more than 8 years. The Mistry said that transfers are not taking place outside this methodology. The Ministry has charged that certain groups who apply pressure to enroll children to national schools, are trying to publish false reports when their requests are turned down.
