Rio’s Christ statue raises heart health awareness

Rio de Janeiro’s famed Christ the Redeemer statue was emblazoned with the image of a beating heart on Tuesday (July 24) to draw attention to the cardiovascular risks of elderly people with diabetes.

A beating red heart was projected onto the chest of the iconic statue to mark the kick off of the ‘Movement to Survive’ campaign to raise awareness among the general public and public authorities of the heart-related medical issues faced by those over 65 with diabetes.

Organizers say that cardiovascular issues kill more people in that particular group in Brazil than HIV, tuberculosis and breast cancer.

The Christ the Redeemer statue is a symbol of Rio de Janeiro that stands atop Corcovado mountain in the city’s southern zone and is illuminated with colored lights for special occasions.
