Luxembourg police starts high voltage chase with new Teslas

Runaway criminals and speed offenders in Luxembourg can now be chased down by one of the country’s new Tesla electric police cars, combining speed with the country’s aim to reduce carbon emissions. As part of a wider initiative to acquire more vehicles with low or zero emissions for its administration, Luxembourg bought two Tesla cars which started patrolling the Grand-Duchy’s roads in May, and four electric Volkswagen cars for other purposes.

In the small western European country only some 100 kilometres from north to south, the range anxiety often associated with electric vehicles does not appear to be a problem for the deputy commander of Luxembourg’s Road Police Force, Laurent Lentz, who said Teslas have twice the battery life than needed for the daily average patrol.

Last August, Luxembourg’s government announced plans to transition ten percent of the country’s state-owned vehicles to hybrid or electric.Speaking ahead of a meeting with her 27 EU counterparts in Brussels, Luxembourg’s environment minister Carole Dieschbourg told Reuters that with 64 percent of the country’s carbon dioxide emission coming from transport, reducing the footprint of its own fleet was key to reach its goals.
