Festival to fill Kalu Ganga Reservoir with water scheduled for 23rd

The festival of gathering water of the Kalu Ganga Reservoir of the Moragahakanda Kalu Ganga which will be added to history as a great irrigation wonder of the island will take place on the 23rd of this month. This mega Irrigation Project will enable the cultivation of lands in the Dry Zone including the Rajarata and solving the water problem. The festival will be held near the Kalu Ganga Dam at Laggala under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The Moragahakan Kalu Ganga Development project will provide water without a shortage for the cultivation of land during both cultivation seasons.  It will nurture around 1200 small and big tanks through the Huruluwewa, Manankattiya, Aru Wewa, Nachchaduwa and Tisawewa. The distribution of water will take place in the first stage through the 96 kilometre long canal way up to Mahakanadarawa. The length of the underground tunnel of this irrigation canal is 28 kilometers. Construction work on the Moragahakanda Kalu Ganga underground tunnel is due to begin on the 23rd of this month.

The Moragahakanda Kalu Ganga Project which costs 230,000 million rupees will effect a new change in the fisheries sector as well as in the power generation sphere. This Project is being implemented as an environment friendly scheme directing special attention to wild animals.

The people of Pallegama in Laggala were relocated in another town as their town was being submerged with the construction of the Kalu Ganga Reservoir. The people who lost their homes following this project has got a new town in Laggala with all facilities. It is this project that has given the highest compensation from among the schemes that were launched in the country.

The public have been given an opportunity to have a glimpse of the site before the Reservoir is being filled with water.
