Attention focused for the first time in Sri Lanka on floating solar power

Attention has been drawn to generating electricity for the first time from floating solar power in large and medium scale reservoirs.
A dialogue has surfaced on the supply of electricity in the future with the increase in per capita electricity consumption. It is an issue in the use of fossil fuel due to the expending foreign exchange which is unbearable and its impact on the environment. As a result solar and wind power and energy production are main alternatives for the future energy crisis. Accordingly it is proposed to establish the country’s first solar energy network in the Parakrama Samudra in Polonnaruwa.
Noteworthy will be the application of technology from Japan. Many countries such as the United States, Japan, Italy and Singapore are already using the floating solar power energy generation mechanism. It has also been possible to maintain environmental damage to a minimum level.
A group of officials from the Kaisail Planning Company of Japan undertook a visit to Sri Lanka recently to explore the possibilities in this respect.
Many state establishments such as the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources Management, the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Finance and Mass Media and the Ministry of Science and Technology are contributing to this task.
