US president under fire over poll meddling comments

There has been a barrage of criticism in the US after President Donald Trump defended Russia over claims of interference in the 2016 elections. At a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Finland, Trump contradicted US intelligence agencies, saying Russia had no reason to meddle. The top Republican in Congress said Trump must see that “Russia is not our ally”.

Putin said that Russia had not interfered election and does not any plans to interfere U.S. internal affairs. A federal grand jury charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking Democratic computer networks in 2016. The indictment, which alleges a wide-ranging conspiracy involving sophisticated hacking and staged releases of documents.

Meanwhile, Putin gave Trump a soccer ball as a symbolic gesture for the U.S., along with Canada and Mexico, hosting the World Cup in 2026. The exchange took place during a joint news conference by the leaders in Helsinki.

Trump repeated his denial Russian interference and called Putin ‘very, very strong,” in an interview with Fox News following the two leaders’ summit in Helsinki.
