A solution for wild elephant problems by next year

Minister Sarath Fonseka says that a solution will be found within next year for the human elephant conflict. The Minister said this while on a visit to Sooriyawewa area to look into the problems faced by the people due to wild elephants. People in Sooriyawewa area underwent hardships recently due to the storming of the village by wild elephants. A special operation was conducted to chase away the wild elephants. Minister Sarath Fonseka and Deputy Minister Palitha Thewarapperuma made an inspection tour of the area to look into the present situation of the area. Attention was paid to several problems of the people including illegally cultivating inside forest reserves. Meanwhile people in the villages on the top of Mahakanadarawa Tank in Mihintale are facing difficulties due to the arrival of wild elephants. Several villages including Ihalagama, Werupankulama and Surukkulama are facing wild elephant threats. Wildlife Officials took steps to save an elephant caught in a trap at Polonnaruwa Parakrama Samudra forest reserve. The trunk of the elephant has been seriously injured due to the trap. Wildlife Officials treated the elephant after removing the trap. In another incident wildlife officials treated a wild elephant near Morawewa tank in Trincomalee.
