New South Wales announces new funding to help protect koala populations in the state

The New South Wales government announced new funding to help protect koala populations around the state that are said to have declined by 25 per cent in the last two decades. Speaking to media at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo, announced The NSW Koala Strategy that will see nearly 25,000 hectares of state forests dedicated for koala habitat, along with a koala hospital and tourism centre built to provide care for sick and injured koalas. Other items in government’s $44.7 million strategy will be to trial a chlamydia vaccine to decrease the disease in the population, build fencing around road-kill hotspots and develop an app for people across NSW to record koala sightings.
