NASA will partner with, the Skunk Works team of Lockheed Martin to design, build and flight test the Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator or X-plane to solve one of the most persistent challenges of supersonic flight the sonic boom. Lockheed’s Skunk Works division was awarded a contract in February 2016 for the preliminary design of the supersonic X-plane, and it was announced in Washington that Skunk Works wins the $247.5 million contract to build a quieter plane that could lead to a new era of supersonic flight. The LBFD is designed to reduce a sonic boom to a “gentle thump.”
