Iraqi troops continued their advance into western Mosul, as the frontline against the Islamic state group moved closer and closer toward the Old City. A massive operation was launched in October to retake Mosul the country’s second largest city which fell to the IS group in 2014. Iraqi officials have overstated gains in the past, declaring areas liberated from IS militants only to see the resumption of fighting or militant attacks. The extremists have targeted eastern Mosul with bombings and other attacks on several occasions in recent weeks. Iraq declared eastern Mosul “fully liberated” in January.
