Heavy rains have caused flooding and mudslides throughout Bolivia. Defense Minister Javier Zavaleta confirmed that “20 municipalities have been declared emergencies and 14 municipalities have been declared disasters.” In Cochabamba, residents were undertaking the arduous task of digging out from a mudslide that damaged homes, leaving many without a place to live. The streets are wet and muddy and what little can be salvaged is completely covered in mud. In La Paz, video images showed houses that had slipped off a hillside because of the heavy rains, crashing into the houses below them. Since the flooding began, two young people have been killed and three persons are missing as a result of the heavy rains and mudslides.
