Thousands of migrants were plucked off rubber dinghies and wooden boats over the past three days in the Mediterranean as traffickers upped the departures from the coast of Libya. According to a spokesman for the International Organisation for Migration a total of 8,360 migrants were rescued and 13 bodies recovered in the operations. IOM spokesman Flavio Di Giacomo told AP most of the migrants were rescued by NGO ships run bys groups like Medicins Sans Frontieres which operate closer to the Libyan shore. Officials from Frontex and Italian prosecutors have recently suggested that these ships have created a “pull factor” encouraging traffickers to send more migrants out to sea in unseaworthy vessels.
