Traditional Neapolitan pizza makers, known as “Pizzaiuoli” celebrated by throwing dough in the air on the streets of Naples after being given special recognition by the United Nations. The news arrived in Naples overnight, that the UN was to recognise the art of Neapolitan pizza making as part of the “intangible cultural heritage of humanity”. In Jeju, South Korea, a committee of UNESCO added Naples’ pizza makers to their list. The committee said the culinary practice of preparing the dough, using a wood fired oven was part of a special tradition in Naples home to some 3,000 “Pizzaiuoli”. Pizza makers revelled in their newfound glory.
