The defending champions Gremio came from behind to draw 1-1 at Defensor Sporting in their opening match of the Copa Libertadores. The group phase of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s Champions League, got underway. 32 teams are taking part, including 16 previous winners of the trophy, amongst them was Brazil’s Gremio who travelled to Uruguay’s Defensor Sporting. Gremio had the edge in a poor first half where both sides lacked any cutting edge in front of goal. The second half was again dominated by the reigning champions and they peppered Defensor’s goal with shot after shot, but goalkeeper Guillermo Maneiro was a match for whatever they offered.
