Young generation to project Sri Lanka’s image in the world should be groomed through the Youth Parliament; PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe is optimistic that a young generation that can project Sri Lanka’s image in the world could be groomed through the Youth Parliament. The Prime Minister expressed this optimism joining in the maiden sessions of the Fourth Youth Parliament.
The inaugural session of the fourth youth Parliament commenced this morning at the Parliamentary Chamber of the National Youth Council in Maharagama. Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa, State Minister Niroshan Perera, and Chairman of the National Youth Services Council Attorney Eranda Weliangage were among the many invited guests. The National Policy and Economic Affairs Ministry and the National Youth Services Council are organizing the Youth Parliament.
176 members of the Youth Parliament which comprises 225 Parliamentarians are appointed through the votes of members of the Youth Clubs. The balance has been selected representing the National List. New MPs were appointed for the positions of Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairman of Committees for the Youth Parliament during the session.
Addressing the Youth Parliament Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe said that economic stability and peace are imperative for the country’s progress. The government has laid the platform to achieve economic prosperity and durable peace in the country.
The Prime Minister said Sri Lanka’s development was stalled due to the 30 year old conflict with the LTTE and therefore urged the youth to work in coexistence with different communities. The Prime Minister pointed out that the Government is committed to rebuilding the country with the support of the international. Premier Wickremasinghe added through the “Balagathu Sri Lanka” programme new development programmes have been initiated for the benefit of the youth of the country.
In his speech, Chairman of the National Youth Services Council Attorney Eranda Weliangage mentioned that the initial step for the grooming of a disciplined politico will take place through the Youth Parliament.
