Construction work on the second stage of the first phase
of the Kaluganga Water Supply Project has been completed. All arrangements are in place for the vesting of the project in the people under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.
The second stage of the first phase of the Kaluganga water supply Scheme was planned with the intention of meeting the increasing daily water requirements in the Greater Colombo and suburban areas. More than 300,000 people will benefit from this Scheme.
Work on the second stage of the first phase of this Scheme was mooted with the objective of improving the facilities of providing secure drinking water to the Greater Colombo and suburban areas.
The Scheme will meet the water needs of the people in the Kesbewa, Miriswatte, Piliyandala, Madapatha, Boralesgamuwa, Polgasowita, Kahathuduwa, Wellamilla, Kiriwatthuduwa, Diyagama, Kindelpitiya, Gonapala, Kumbuka and Panadura East locations. Also consumers in the Pettah, Hulftsdorp, Kotahena, Kompannaveediya and Maradana will be able to receive a more streamlined and quality water supply.
Hitherto these areas received water from the Kelani River. As the maximum quantity of water was been obtained from the Kelani River, there was a need for another water resource to meet the requirements of the consumers.
The production capacity of the Kandana Water Purification Plant has been increased to 120,000 cubic metres. Accordingly the related areas will receive a quality water supply with effect from tomorrow.
