The Welikanda Water Scheme constructed at the request of President Maithripala Sirisena, was declared open recently. The occasion was held under the guidance of a group of officers affiliated to the Sri Lanka Belgium Friendship Association.
The water scheme has the capacity to purify ten thousand litres of water per day. This could meet the water requirements of about sixty thousand persons of six hundred and seventy families with pure drinking water. The project was undertaken at a cost of 2.5 million rupees.
A group including former District Secretary of the Polonnaruwa District and President of the Sri Lanka Belgium Friendship Association A. Gunawardena was present on the occasion.
