Many people were severely affected by the drought prevailing in several parts of the country. Finding drinking water is a serious issue faced by the people. The Government has taken initiatives to supply drinking water through bowsers.

Many families in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts are encountering a water shortage. 17,821 families within the Polonnaruwa Divisional Secretariat Division are experiencing a severe water shortage. The Government has deployed 37 bowsers for the supply of the necessary drinking water. Water is being continuously supplied on a daily basis. It is reported that 18,362 children of 36 schools are encountering the drinking water issue. Meanwhile, some villages within the Embilipitiya Divisional Secretariat Division are also encountering the water problem. Officers of the Embilipitiya Community Police Unit were supplying water to the people at their expense. Water is being provided to villages such as Thalagahawala, Kekiriyaya and Bosirigama.
Officials in charge of Reservoirs claim that the water levels of main Reservoirs affiliated to Hydropower plants have declined. A decrease in the water levels of the Randenigala, Victoria and Kotmale Reservoir has been witnessed. The Mahaweli Authority said that the water level of the Rantembe Reservoir has also receded.
