Vijaya Kumaranatunge was a film idol and a humanist politician. The darkest Tuesday in the country’s political history dawned on 16th February in the year 1988. It was the day that Vijaya Kumaranatunge was gunned down with a T-56 weapon.
Vijaya was born on 09 October 1945. He entered the cinema as an actor, playing a leading role in the film Hanthane Kathawa. He continuously became the most Popular Actor for six years from the year 1983 to 1988. He received the best actor’s award for his role in the film “Kedapathaka Chaaya.” Other than as an actor he won the hearts of the people for his humane qualities. He loved the people so much As a result he entered the political battle in the 1970s with the intention to save the people who were undergoing hardships.
Vijaya who entered politics representing the Lanka Samasamaja Party, joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in 1977 representing the Katana electorate. He served as a giant leader in the election battle of Hector Kobbekaduwa in 1982. As a result he was arrested under the Naxalite charges.
Vijaya was gunned down with a T-56 weapon on 16 February 1988. The attitude shown by him towards the Northern war was the best factor to brand him as a humanist.
Despite strong opposition from the Southern politicos, Vijaya risked his life and visited the North to talk with the LTTE. If an opportunity was given to make his tour to the North a success, the bitter experiences of the country’s war would have changed.
Several ceremonies were held in the country in view of the 29 commemoration of Vijaya Kumaranatunge. The ceremony organized at Seeduwa commenced under the patronage of former President Chandrika Kumaratunge. She garlanded the statue of Vijaya. Among those present were many politicians and artistes.
