UNICEF’s report on judicial action with regard to children handed over to Justice Minister

Minister of Justice and Foreign Employment Thalatha Athukorale has underscored that it is imperative to take action protecting the fundamental rights of children when judicial initiatives are being taken. In this respect, the Minister revealed of plans to appoint an Operations Committee.

Minister Thalatha Athukorale expressed these views after accepting a report compiled by the United Nations Children’s Fund on initiating judicial action with regard to children. Sri Lanka’s UNICEF Coordinator Tim Stern handed over the report to the Minister.

Minister Thalatha Athukorale said that they appointed an Operations Committee on what action should be initiated with regard to various abuses on children and also the priority that should be given with regard to the children. The necessary decisions will be taken via this Committee. These will be enacted into laws and action speeded up.
