Motorists have been permitted to use the stretch from Kottawa to Kadawatha of the Expressway free of charge. The Ministry of Highways announced that this decision was taken as a solution to the congestion in the Colombo area.
In the meantime, the Railway Control Room said that the operation of several trains has been suspended.
Heavy traffic congestion is reported in the Colombo City and suburbs following the extreme weather conditions. As an immediate solution, motorists have been permitted to use the stretch from Kottawa to Kadawatha along the Colombo Outer Circular Road free of charge. Only vehicles which are eligible to ply on the Expressway can use the Kadawatha-Kottawa stretch of the Expressway using the Kadawatha, Kotalawala, Athurugiriya and Kottawa interchanges. Only the Kaduwala entrance of the Colombo Outer Circular road has been closed until further notice due to floods.
Meanwhile, the operation of trains on the Northern track has been obstructed following the inundation of the stretch in the Tambuttegama area. As such the trains on this track from Colombo will operate only up to Tambuttegama. Trains operating from the North have been limited only to Talawa. The Railway Control Room announced that the Kankesanthurai Jaffna Vavuniya intercity train will not be operating.
