The Department of Meteorology has said that showers or thundershowers can be expected today too in many parts of the country.
Showers or thundershowers will occur over most provinces of the island after 2.00 p.m. Showers or thundershowers will occur in the Eastern and Southern provinces during the morning too. Heavy falls about 100mm can be expected at some places, particularly in the Western, North-western Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, Eastern and Uva Provinces. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
In the meantime, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galls to Trincomalee via Hambanthota and Batticaloa. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in other sea areas in the evening or night. Winds will be South easterly in the sea areas around the island and speed will be 20-30 kilometres per hour.
In the meantime, a special discussion was held under the patronage of Minister of Disaster Management and Power and Renewable Energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya to examine the initiatives that should be taken in the face of the inclement weather the country is experiencing. The discussion held at the Disaster Management Ministry was attended officials of the Department of Meteorology and Disaster Management Centres. Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya also joined in an observation tour of the Special Operations Studio.
Torrential rain was also experienced in the Central Hills today. Our correspondent reported that heavy traffic congestion was experienced along roads in the Central Hills due to misty conditions.
In the meantime, heavy rainfall was experienced in many areas the Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Mannar and Mullaitivu Districts thus ending a long spell of drought experienced in these areas.
