Today is World Earth Day. American Senator Gaylord Nelson pioneered to commence the World Earth Day celebrations from the 22nd April 1970. The earth provides us with many things. It gives water, air, food and habitats without expecting anything in return. The World Earth Day is celebrated to protect the earth which gives its love to the humans without any conditions. The theme of this year’s Earth Day is eradicating plastic pollution. Several programmes were conducted to educate on the damage that could be caused to the environment by plastic. The soil, ocean and atmosphere have been polluted due to plastic. Environmental scientists said that by the year 2050, the amount of plastic that could be added to the ocean by the people could exceed the aquatic life in the oceans. Plastic has been deposited on the earth over the years. Environmentalists point out that 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic has been released to the earth since 1950s. It has been possible only to recycle about 9 percent of that amount. Scientists say that poisonous chemicals in plastic affect the food chain of humans and animals.
