The CID is slated to produce the report on the Welikada Prison shooting incident before the Courts on the 13th of this month. The Attorney General has informed about this to the Court of Appeal. Several other cases also came before the courts today.
27 inmates were shot dead by the security personnel at the Welikada Prison on the 9th and 10th of November of 2012. A petition was filed at the Court of Appeal requesting to issue an order to the IGP and the Director of the CID to conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Further consideration of the petition was postponed to the 23rd of this month.
The Attorney General informed the Court of Appeal that the report on the progress of the investigations regarding the incident will be submitted on the 13th of this month. Petitioner Sudesh Nandimal Silva has filed the petition and he says he is an eye-witness of the shooting incident. The Petitioner alleges that even though complaints have been lodged with regard to the incident, proper investigations have not been initiated yet. The petitioner further stated that the prisoners were killed when Army troops were called to control the clash between the Special Task Force personnel and the inmates.
