Sri Lanka regains the Generalized System of Preference or the GSP Plus Facility from today. Accordingly Sri Lanka receives the opportunity of exporting 6600 goods duty free to 26 European countries, gaining immense economic benefits.
The country was deprived of this facility during the previous regime but the present Government was able to regain this facility due to the democracy enthroned in the country in addition to the protection of human rights.
Sri Lanka was able to receive this GSP Facility due to the correct foreign policy of the incumbent Government, the protection of human rights and democracy and the total dedication of the President, the Prime Minister and the entire Government. Sri Lanka was able to fulfil the commitments for the receipt of the GSP Facility again.
Finally the Foreign and Trade Ministers Committee decided to grant the GSP Plus facility to Sri Lanka. Earlier a Resolution was presented to the European Parliament against the granting of this Facility. However it was defeated by a majority of 317 votes which was a major victory achieved by the country. The country’s farsighted Foreign Policy had a direct influence on it.
Sri Lanka first received this facility in the year 2005. But it was deprived of this facility in the year 2010. The present Government held several rounds of discussion to regain this facility. And finally the talks became productive with the country receiving the GSP Plus Facility from today.
Expressing his views on this achievement, Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva said that this was a victory of the entire Government and it would bring immense benefits to the country.
