A Special Raid Unit has been established on the instructions of the President
to rein in illegal excavations. A special Police team has been affiliated to this Unit which is operative from today. The Unit will be operating round the clock.
The attention of the President has been drawn to the harm done to the environment following illegal excavations that are being carried out including the violation of the conditions mentioned in the permit. The President gave instructions to the Inspector General of Police and the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau to launch a special Raid Unit to contain such illegal excavations. Accordingly a Unit comprising members of the Police Special Task Force has been mooted.
Chairman of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau Kithsiri Dissanayake said that these activities will take place under the direct supervision of the President.
