Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has revealed of his intention
to create a new tradition within Parliament. The Speaker made this revelation expressing views to the media after calling on the Asgiriya and Malwatte Mahanayake Theras.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya first called on the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera and secured his blessings. Thereafter, the Speaker called on the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter, the Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera and the Malwatte Anunayake the Ven. Dimbulkumbure Sri Wimaladharma Thera. Expressing views to the media after paying courtesy calls on the Mahanayakes, the Speaker referred to his intention of introducing a code of ethics for Parliamentarians.
The Speaker told the journalists that his intention was change the laws and regulations that hitherto existed in Parliament and go for a new tradition. Oversight Committees were being established and it is a system that exists in democratic countries in the world. He said that almost half the members of these Committees are headed by members from the Opposition. This he said he saw as a salient feature of democracy.
