Speaker inks three Amendment Acts relevant to Local Government elections

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya inked the three Local Government, Pradeshiya Sabha and Municipal Council Amendment Bills in Parliament today.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya inked the Pradeshiya Sabha Amendment, Urban Council Amendment and Municipal Council Amendment Acts related to the Local Government Elections Act which was passed in Parliament recently.
Among those who were present on the occasion were Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Mustapha and Parliamentary Secretary General Dhammika Dassanayake.
The Speaker said that today was a historic opportunity for Sri Lankan politics. An opportunity has been received to create a new political culture. As such the responsibility of Parliament ends today. This will soon be gazetted and pave the way for the conduct of the Local Government polls in January. The Prime Minister also promised in Parliament to hold the Provincial Council elections in March. He said that everyone should be dedicated to honouring this pledge.
Minister Faizer Mustapha said that a major political change has been effected through the introduction of this new elections system. There is a possibility of establishing a stipulated number of members through the enactment of these bills. They have enacted all the laws necessary for this purpose. He revealed his intention to submit tomorrow the Bill with respect to the establishment of the Elections Commission. He also revealed his desire to establish the stipulated number of members of the Local Councils.
