Sluice gates of Reservoirs affiliated to Power Plants will not be opened

Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has said that the sluice gates of Reservoirs affiliated to power plants coming under the purview of the Ceylon Electricity Board will not be opened despite the prevalence of the rain. The Minister made this reference briefing the media over the disastrous situation in the Kegalla District.
The water level of Maoussakelle, a main Reservoir is now at 30.9 percent. The water level of the Castlereigh Reservoir is 36 percent. The Minister pointed out that more water is needed for these Reservoirs to reach the spill level. However, the water level of the Lakshapana, Wimalasurendra and Canyon Reservoirs have reached the spill level.
Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that it is the Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat in the Kegalla District that is facing a high risk due to the adverse weather conditions.
Two children in the Welangalla area have been buried under an earth mound. It is also reported that two persons who had come to view an earth mound slip on the Ambalanpitiya road had been buried.
The Minister said that at least 2000 families are displaced in the Talduwa, Ihala Talduwa and Welangalla areas due to flood waters.
Operations are in progress to rescue the disaster struck people. The Minister added that action has been taken to provide them with all facilities needed including food and drink.
